The aging process can bring about many challenges. One of these challenges is the impact of chronic diseases, which can affect activities of daily living, reduce quality of life, and increase mortality risk. Seniors’ life expectancy is increasing as well as the risk of developing chronic disease increases with age. In addition, certain diseases occur more often in the senior population. The good news is that many common chronic diseases are preventable and manageable.The prevalence of co-morbid conditions makes treating elderly patients different from other populations. While mortality rates have declined for most chronic diseases, some have increased.
Many of these patients are on numerous medications which can have interactions or serious side effects. Therefore, the treatment or management of a variety of conditions in the elderly population can be a challenge.
